One of the best known and most feared poker players in the world has finally won his first WPT poker title. Phil Ivey, one of the most successful tournament and cash game players in the world, finally won a WPT title in Los Angeles at the end of February, having made it to a remarkable eight final tables before notching up the win.
By his own admission, Ivey’s first couple of attempts at WPT wins were jeopardised through his lack of experience in front of the big lights. Having finessed his game, he knew to win this tournament he would need to bring his best game to the table, with the likes of Phil Hellmuth and Nam Le lining up with him in the final six.
Hellmuth, known to many as ‘The Poker Brat’, was arguably Ivey’s toughest obstacle on the final table but ended up stumbling out in sixth. Ivey already came to the final stage of the tournament with the chip lead, and secured the win after beating Quinn Do heads-up for the $1,596,100 first prize and the title he has sought for so long – WPT LA Poker Classic Champion.
