It’s swell for De Mel in Bolton

Monday, 25 January 2010

Priyan De Mel has started 2010 just as he finished 2009 by taking down a GUKPT Main Event. The 36-year-old outlasted a field of 146 runners at Bolton’s G Casino to claim the £44,600 first prize.

The Londoner joins Julian Thew and Tony Cascarino in the select group that has won two GUKPT Main Events and becomes the first to win back-to-back £1000 events. A suitably proud winner told the GUKPT Blog that the win was “something I could tell my grandkids with pride later in life”.

De Mel went into heads up play with Andrew Purser holding a healthy chip lead and never relinquished that advantage, grinding Purser down playing small pot poker.

The final hand saw Purser’s push with Kc10h called by De Mel who was holding As-4c. A flop of 8d-Qs-4h gave Purser hope and a 9 on the turn gave him even more outs. The river was another 9 though giving De Mel his second GUKPT Main Event win and leaving Purser to settle for just over £30,000 by way of consolation.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Priyan De Mel £44,600
2. Andrew Purser £30,300
3. Jamie Sykes £19,000
4. Terry Owens £11,700
5. Marc Wright £9,100
6. Justin Devenport £6,900
7. Philip Booth £5,500
8. Jeff Kimber £4,000
9. Aaron Berry £2,900
10. Mark Robinson £2,200

The next GUKPT event is a £100 freezout at Bluesqpoker.com tonight at 8pm. The next live events are the inaugural £200 GUKPT Club Championship series on 13th February in Blackpool, Coventry and Thanet. The GUKPT proper returns on 20th February with leg two at the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall.
