Mention ten years ago that the World Series of Poker would be one of ESPN’s highest ranking weekly shows and you would most likely have been laughed at by surly football and hockey fans. Today though, it’s very much the case and the network is looking to cash in on the growing success of televised poker, by finding a game to succeed it. In dominoes, it seems that they may have one.
Already massive on their Spanish network, the strategy game is likely to get a berth on the English language channel soon, with the World Championships also due to be aired from the Dominican Republic in 2007. ESPN are banking on the fact that in Latin America, dominoes is always watched on street corners and outside bars, with both players and spectators getting more than a little rowdy when things start heating up.
The game also has a celebrity backer in the form of Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzman – star of Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love among others. Having been brought up on the Lower East Side, he says he’s seen the excitement of live dominoes and believes that it will transfer to the small screen very well.
