Leading Irish bookmakers Paddypower.com has announced details of Paddy First, its new incentive for players who qualify online for the 2008 Irish Open. On top of winning the lion’s share of the €3m guaranteed prize-pool, if the player who wins qualified online with paddypowerpoker.com, they will win an additional prize — free entry to the tournament for the next five years. Even if they don’t win the event, the highest placing paddypower.com qualifier will be freerolled into the 2009 event.
The Irish Open is certainly an event on the up: the buy in is up (to €4,500), capacity is up (to 1,000), the prize-pool has gone up to a guaranteed €3m, and the additional bonus for the online qualifiers is sure to increase interest in the event further still.
Paddy Power, the communications manager for Paddy First was hopeful for an online qualifier to win this pot of gold. “In 2007, Thomas Finneran from Galway outlasted more than 70 online qualifiers to finish 7th out of 708 players. The previous year Sligo man Pat O’Callaghan also came close to the top prize, finishing 14th out of 339.”
“Thomas and Pat have blazed a trail and shown that our online players can compete with the very best in the world. My money is most definitely on one of our guys taking home the Terry Rogers trophy this year.”
Satellites to the event are already available at paddypower.com, with the 2008 Irish Open taking place over the March bank holiday weekend (March 19-24) in Dublin.
