Months of rumours, tourney announcements, name changes and questions over whether anything can really compete with the WSOP and WPT have finally been put to bed after the International Poker Association Tour finally confirmed a definite start date for its inaugural season.
Due to kick off at Hollywood Park Casino on May 8th, the IPAT, formerly known as the North American Poker Tour, will travel across the United States, taking in events at venues such as Niagara Falls, before heading abroad for major tourneys as well.
The idea behind the tour is to differentiate itself from the televised matches of the WSOP and WPT, according to Chairman Will Waldrop. “We recognised the sports nature of poker and the need to give it sports stature by putting the best players on the road,” he said. This can be seen as a snub to those who buy themselves into top ranking tournaments without much experience at the highest level. This should lead to a very competitive approach, especially with the likes of Mike Matusow and Antonio Esfandiari on board.
