Hellmuth and Bertrand 'Elky' Grospellier to captain Caesars Cup teams

After taking a sabbatical last year, the Caesars Cup, which pits the best in North American poker against their European counterparts in a Ryder Cup style team event, returns at next month's WSOPE.

Following his highly successful World Series, Poker Brat Phil Hellmuth will be captaining the Americas team with Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier leading the Europeans. Each team will comprise five players with the captains selecting the remaining four members of the team. The two line ups will face off in a no-limit hold'em tournament that will feature both partner and heads-up formats with points awarded for different elements.

Hellmuth has already hinted at his selection. In a Tweet yesterday the WSOP Player of the Year wrote, “I'm considering picking: Phil Ivey, @Erik_Seidel Johnny Chan, @HuckleberrySeed @RealKidPoker @Tom_Dwan @JasonMercier @BenbaLamb”. There's been no word yet from ElkY about the European line up.

The Annette Obrestad led European team surprised the pundits by winning the maiden contest in 2009.

“Team Americas has a score to settle after what most considered a colossal upset in London,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart. “You see a real rivalry developing as European players continue to win more tournaments around the world.”
