Reigning champion and Poker mastermind Phil Hellmuth has announced that he’ll be returning to Vegas to defend his crown in the second annual Heads-Up Poker Championship in March.
The tournament will be screened on NBC later in the year and the players will be competing for a prize pot of $1.5 million, which is to include a $500,000 top prize.
Already confirmed for the event along with Hellmuth are poker legends Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson, and NBC will be hoping to add to the impressive four million viewers who watched last year’s inaugural event. It was the first time a broadcast television network had devoted a series of telecasts to the sport of poker and its one-on-one format that provides confrontational tension and drama as players advance through the field certainly enticed the viewers.
After winning last year’s contest Hellmuth enthused, “The title is more important than the money,” but he certainly won’t be complaining if he can secure another $500,000 win this time around.
One slot in the tournament will be awarded to the winner of the National Heads-Up Online Poker tournament, an open competition at the tournament’s website, www.nbcheadsup.com.
