Shortly before competing in the World Series of Poker Main Event, record breaking player, Phil Hellmuth crashed a promotional sports car in a Las Vegas parking lot. Hellmuth, who arrived to play dressed as a racing driver, crashed out of the tournament after only four hours of play. He is sponsored by online poker site Ultimate Bet and the car had his face and the online poker site’s name emblazoned on its bonnet, when he had what the site’s website referred to as a ‘freak accident’.
Some commentators have said that while there was a freak and there was an accident, but driving headfirst into a bollard which had a red and white hazard plank in front of it and was flanked by two orange cones, that may not be an entirely accurate description of what took place.
The video, available on the Internet, shows the car falling to pieces and the bonnet being completely bent out of shape, but Hellmuth then jumps out to assess the damage and appears unhurt. However, there is a distinctive reddening of his cheeks! What? The world’s greatest poker player, blushing?
Hellmuth quipped “Well, you can’t win every race,” and later told RawVegas.tv. 'I'm just a guy, man, and when you get in a fast car and you're a guy you push it.'
After winning eleven WSOP bracelets, Hellmuth is entitled to a crash out.
