Harrah's Entertainment Inc's chief executive said this week that he's looking at bringing the World Series of Poker brand into Internet poker in the UK and continental Europe.
Gary Loveman made the comment at the Global Gaming Expo, the largest annual trade show held for the North American casino industry.
Since the passing of the UIGEA in America, banks and payment processors are not permitted to handle cash-transactions involving US-based players to and from poker sites. This isn’t the case in Europe, which leads Harrah’s to consider taking the plunge more seriously.
'If you take a look at the legal landscape in continental Europe and the United Kingdom, there are countries where it's demonstrably legal and there's absolutely no encumbrance,' Loveman said. 'Those are areas that are very attractive to us.'
Market and legal conditions are being studied before any decisions are made, with tournament spokesman Gary Thompson saying that Harrah’s will not enter the online poker market 'where there are any grey areas.”
Harrah's bought the rights to the WSOP in 2004, and it is still considered the game's pinnacle event of the year. Attendance this year was hurt because many online poker sites didn't give out Main Event prize packages to US residents.
