Hansen and Sahamies riding high at EPT Barcelona

Tuesday, 21 August 2012

The temperatures in Barcelona is red hot at the moment and the same description could be levelled at the quality of the field that has assembled in the Catalan capital for the opening event of the new European Poker Tour season.

670 players took to the felt for Day 1B yesterday taking the total number of entrants to 1,070, a record for an EPT event in Spain. Leading the way at the close was Guy Bachar who closed with 193,100 in chips followed by Samir Hadad (169,200) and Hila Dan Ionut.

The big names were out in force yesterday with Theo Jorgensen (129,000), Gus Hansen (103,500) and Ivan Demidov (100,800) all building up six-figure stacks. Ilari Sahamies, fresh from a final table appearance in the €50k Super High Roller, will return with 86,700 with Daniel Negreanu (48,500), Luca Pagano (35,000), Martin Staszko (33,400) and Barry Greenstein (20,800) all still in contention.

A kimono-clad Bertrand Grospellier was one of many big names to hit the rail yesterday and ElkY can count himself unlucky, after his set of 8s was outdrawn by his opponent's pocket aces. Other notable bust outs included Jonathan Duhamel, Chris Moorman, Praz Bansi, JP Kelly and Chino Rheem.

With a stack of 236,200, day 1A chip leader Aku Joentausta is the man to beat when play resumes this lunchtime.
