Doyle Brunson is a legend amongst poker players – he has 10 WSOP bracelets to prove it, and has also written the acclaimed ‘bible of poker’: Doyle Brunson’s Super System.
The Hall of Fame Magazine (HOF) honours men and women from all walks and times, and this three page article by Ryan Bernstein, is a worthy tribute to poker’s best known name.
Bernstein writes, “Any way you deal it, the history of poker is a biography of Doyle Brunson.”
Brunson’s sheer longevity as a player is exceptional in itself, but the article implores an appreciation for the manner in which he has lived his life.
“Doyle Brunson was born to farmers in Longworth, Texas in 1933 and straight into poverty. He knew the only way to get out of Longworth and break the hold the depression had on his family was through athletics,” continues Bernstein.
However, Brunson severely broke his leg just as The Minneapolis Lakers were showing an interest. The article paints a picture of man who found poker at a time when luck had deserted him, and his basketball dreams had evaporated.
The rest, as they say, is history, and Brunson’s place there is certain.
