Gregory Brooks win LAPC Main Event

Carlos Mortensen was looking for a record breaking fourth WPT title and Vivek Rajkumar his second but in the end neither could match Gregory Brooks who took down the WPT LA Poker Classic last night.

Brooks started the final day fourth out of six in the chip counts but doubled up almost immediately after his pocket aces held on against the chip leader Vivek Rajkumar's pocket queens. The 23-year-old American kept that momentum up throughout the final table, eliminating three-time WPT winner Carlos Mortensen to set up a heads up clash with Rajkumar.

The final hand saw Brooks raise to 325,000 with Rajkumar making the call. Rajkumar checked the 7d3s2h board leaving Brooks to bet 400,000. Rajkumar then pushed his final 3.5m into the middle. Brooks went into the tank before making the call with 7c8s for top pair putting him well ahead of Rajkumar's 10hJh. Brooks dodged the overcards on the turn and river to win his first World Poker Tour title and a cool $1.654m as well as a place in the $25k WPT Championship event.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1st:  Gregory Brooks  -  $1,654,120
2nd:  Vivek Rajkumar  -  $908,730
3rd:  Carlos Mortensen  -  $640,680
4th:  Amir Lehavot  -  $421,680
5th:  Steve Gross  -  $304,000
6th:  Darryll Fish  -  $235,350
