Yesterday Launch poker reported that Greg Raymer’s online poker account had been cracked. The 2004 World Champion began with nickel-dime poker in college, but turned professional after studying the game.
No one knows how much he had in his Poker Stars account when the thief began removing chips. Greg was not alone: using heads up games the hacker, thought to be from Europe, moved money from the accounts of a number of players into his own. The unusual account activity was noticed and reported to Poker Stars before Raymer was wiped out.
Poker Stars is one of the biggest online poker companies. Its credit card transactions are processed through its E-Cash subsidiary, Rational Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, based on the Isle of Man as well as Openshore Trading Limited, in Cyprus.
Poker Stars did not deny the lapse in security, saying, “We could not give out any specific details without Greg's authorisation, anymore than we could give out any other player's details.”
“There is no way for an account to be compromised through our system. Cases of ‘hacking’ are usually a result of insufficient protection and account security on the side of the account holder.”
They are hoping that Greg Raymer will make a statement.
