Green Light for Norwegian Live Tournaments

In recent years, Norwegian poker players have had to head overseas to take part in their own national championship. Even Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham played host to the Nordic hordes in 2009.

Poker players from Norway may soon be able to enjoy limited tournament action on home soil though after a decision from the national government.

Under the proposed new legislation, low buy-in tournaments featuring small fields wouldn't require authorization from local regulators.

Responding to a query from the Progress Party's Roy Steffensen, culture minister Thorhild Widwey wrote, “I hope we can have a regulatory framework in place in time for a Norway championships in poker that can be held in Norway in 2015.”

In a letter to the Vart Land newspaper, Widwey added that the latest proposals will not mean complete deregulation of poker in Norway. Instead, the government wants “to open a system of permits for land -based poker tournaments.”
