Chances are you weren’t planning on heading to Saipan to set up your own poker machine business. But if in the unlikely event that you are, then it seems that the islands of Micronesia might not be the best place to do it.
New laws have just been passed unanimously by the House of Representatives and are now sitting on the Governor’s desk while he spends the next 45 days pondering whether to take the plunge and charge operators annual up front fees rather than the current quarterly ones, which it is believed, cost the state almost $7 million. The Poker Machine Licence Fees Act 2006 will cover all 1,226 licensed poker machines on Saipan, each commanding an annual payment of $12,000. The aim is to ensure that owners don’t skip their payments and also to better fund enforcement of already tight gambling laws on the island. You might be better setting up online down in Costa Rica.
