Gold for Silverman at Alpha8

Gold for Silverman at Alpha8

Wednesday, 28 August 2013

It's been quite the few months for Steven Silverman. In May he pocketed €775,400 after winning the €25,000 High Roller event at the EPT Grand Final and he's now written his name into the WPT record books after taking down the inaugural Alpha 8 super high roller event in Florida.

Silverman started the day ninth out of nine but steadily worked his way through a stacked final table field that included the likes of Bill Perkins, Daniel Alaei, Joseph Cheong and Jason Mercier. That notable quartet all missed out on the money as did Isaac Haxton who was the unfortunate bubble boy. Ike, who had fired two $100,000 bullets, bowed out in fifth after losing a flip with pockets 10s against JC Tran's AQ.

Long time chip leader Matt Glantz departed in fourth with $243,180 to his name when his 10h8h couldn't come from behind to beat Jeff Gross's A6. Gross followed Glantz to the rail soon after, pushing with K10. Unfortunately for the Baltimore native, Silverman looked him up with a dominating AK which held to take the tournament heads up.

The two-handed action was short and sweet for Silverman who took control against JC Tran after winning a flip with 99 versus the new 888Poker pro's AJs. The end came soon after when Silverman open shoved with Q9 with Tran making the call with a crushed Q8. A Td8s5h9sQh board gave Silverman the better two-pair and with it a first prize of $891,660. WSOP November Nine leader Tran boosted his bankroll by $526,890.

“Heads-up with (J.C.) Tran I felt pretty comfortable,” Silverman told Bluff.com. “We started with 50 big blinds and I was kind of playing fast – keeping the pace. We played a couple hands, he bet big on the river once and I think maybe I should have folded. But I had a good hand and I just kinda felt like I should call. Then we just got it in flipping and I won.”
