Perhaps the people at Full Tilt are kicking themselves now. A few months back we mentioned an unfortunate clerical error which came about after Jimmy Fricke approached Full Tilt for possible sponsorship into the Aussie Millions events this month. Their decision and the unfortunate ‘leak’ of Howard Lederer’s less-than-glowing verdict on ‘gobboboy’ might come back to haunt them a little now though, after Fricke won the $500 Mixed Stud game in Melbourne.
Ninety-six players entered the event, and whilst the buy-in was significantly less than the main event where Fricke succumbed to Gus Hansen to take second place, the win will certainly boost Fricke’s credentials. Players included WSOPE H.O.R.S.E Champion Thomas Bihl, along with Mel Judah and Lee Nelson. The structure was effectively R.S.E, with alternation rounds of Stud High, Stud Eight or Better, and Razz.
The tournament was there for Fricke to win with three tables left. A big stack of chips helped him surge to the final table with around one third of the chips in play, and a consummate performance and a little luck in the right places helped Fricke win the event and $16,800. Mentioning his runner-up finish in last year’s Main Event, Fricke quipped, “'I really wanted to win last year. Maybe I can scratch off the date on the trophy.'
