The Gambling Exchange said it wanted a fresh new angle for its new poker commercials, so it hired innovative writer/director team, the Goetz brothers, to help create something a little bit different. The brothers are part of bicoastal production company, The Joneses, and, being avid poker fans, were happy to take on the challenge and draw on their own experiences of the game.
“Every commercial we’d ever seen about poker took place around a card table,” Michael Goetz said. “So we thought it would be fun to go outside the casino. Because poker is often compared to life, we began thinking of ways of applying poker to real life situations.”
With that as their starting point the Goetz Brothers wrote scripts for several scenarios around the tagline, “Play the World.”
Despite the relatively small budget, the boys wanted the spots to have a big cinematic feel and so hired one time Tarantino cinematographer, Guillermo Navarro.
“We saved money wherever we could so that we had the resources available for the things that really mattered, such as hiring one of the best cinematographers in the industry,” Kevin Goetz said. “As a result, we were able to deliver two spots—and two lifts—that have the quality of the best national commercials.”
The Gambling Exchange have said the ads are proving a massive success and people are relating strongly to the way they highlight hoe, like poker, we have to take gambles and make careful decisions in everyday life.
