It may have attracted some of the of the best players Ireland and Europe could muster, but when the chips had all found their way to one owner, it was local player Jude Ainsworth who emerged victorious. Ainsworth overcame Michael McCool from Nottingham, England to win the €180,000 first place prize.
Ainsworth had just finished his PhD in Biochemistry, but his decision to take some time out to play in the Irish Championships might have been the smartest thing he’s ever done. With a field of pros including the likes of Ciaran O'Leary, Robert Williamson III, Padraig Parkinson, Jon Kalmar, Marty Smyth, Marcel Luske, Noel Furlong and Mike Sexton, the local player overcame a tough field to net the title.
The final hand of the day saw McCool move in with 5h 5d to be called by Ainsworth’s Td 8d. The flop came Ad Jd 9s, and the Qh on the turn locked up the win for the Irishman.
In winning the tournament at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Ainsworth had to overcome 297 other runners who had generated a prize pool of €542,500. Overnight chip leader Keith McFadden couldn’t maintain the advantage he took to the final table, and he eventually went out in sixth. McCool took home €100,000 for second, and Tommy Watson cashed for €60,000 in third.
