Galfond vs Obama – BlueFirePoker issue $1m challenge

Monday, 9 March 2009

If the battle against the UIGEA was a game of heads-up poker, experts would say that gameflow and momentum is going the way of the poker players. Recent rulings have looked favourably on poker and Barney Frank predicts the US will actually need a regulated online gambling industry.

Striking when the opponent is week, Phil Galfond’s new training site BlueFirePoker has issued a challenge to President Obama “or any member of US congress” and put up $1m to their opponent’s $1 to prove poker is a game of skill.

Nothing about the game type (although it will presumably be NLHE) has been announced except that the game "will include an equal number of chips at the start of the game", and that the "length of the game must also be long enough to demonstrate the advantage of skill". BlueFirePoker’s press release states that "poker prowess and experience demonstrate themselves over time - in the long-run, the better player wins the game because the player's skills increase the odds of success."

Should BlueFirePoker lose, they will donate $1,000,000 to the charity of their opponents’ choice. Should they win then they have proven poker is a game of skill, and at the very least it is a good marketing opportunity for the site.
