France set to legalize internet poker?

Friday, 6 March 2009

French budget minister Eric Woerth has announced details of a new bill which could finally clear the way for online poker in France.

The proposed legislation will see the opening up of state monopolies to competition and will include provisions for some online gambling including poker.

Details are still sketchy but it’s likely that a 2% tax will be levied on online poker winnings in addition to the rake.

Speaking at a press conference the minister commented that “Rather than banning 25,000 websites, we'd rather give licenses to those who will respect public and social order."

Assuming the new law is passed, legal online poker could be available in France by 1 January 2010.
