Over 100 people visited a conference room at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace on December 19 to hear what Joe Navarro, a retired FBI agent who specialised in non-verbal communication, had to say about poker tells. Amongst those present were pros Bobby Huff, Mark Seif, and World Series of Poker ladies champion Mary Jones.
Navarro believes the first step in understanding people is to understand the brain. “Foundationally, if you understand the brain,” Navarro said, “at the table you will not have any problem interpreting behaviour.”
It is because poker conjures up so many primitive emotions that Navarro believes the skills he gained in the fight against crime are directly applicable to the game of poker. Navarro’s expertise is in translating even the tiniest of gestures or movements generated by the body’s limbic system, the part which generates uncontrollable functions. “It’s this brain that reacts to the world around you,” Navarro explained. “The limbic brain does not think.”
Each of the seminar attendees received a copy of Navarro’s book, “Read’em and Reap: A Career FBI Agent’s Guide to Decoding Poker Tells” as well as a copy of the slide-show presentation which Navarro hung his seminar upon.
