Florida to Increase No-Limit Poker Buy-Ins

Florida to Increase No-Limit Poker Buy-Ins

Tuesday, 31 March 2009

The US state of Florida currently has one of the most ridiculous rules regarding poker that we’ve ever heard – a $100 maximum buy-in on No-Limit games. Great for $0.25/$0.50, acceptable for $0.5/$1 and annoying for $1/$2. However, this is enforced at ANY limit, even $5/$10.

Obviously a bid to cut down on excessive gambling, many detractors of the rule argue that it promotes gambling as playing a short-stack relies heavily on luck. Florida resident and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso argued that skilled players "don't have enough chips in front of them to play out the bets and raises that are required in the skillful aspect of the game."

However, the state now wishes to turn Florida into a premier gaming resort by raising buy-ins in cash games and tournaments – the move may see major televised tournaments come to Florida. The gambling age is also being considered for lowering – from 21 to 18.
