The WPT gives poker players their chance to be a star. The unknown player, who normally wouldn’t get to play under the gaze of the world’s poker audience, has that ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. Whilst this is part of its charm, some spectators miss the days when WPT final tables were packed with professionals. They won’t be disappointed here.
Tunica will see Men ‘The Master’ Nguyen, Freddy Deeb, Hoyt Corkins and John Spadavecchia clash, with two unknown quantities in the form of Gabe Costner and Brett Faustman intent on stealing the show. They might find it tough though coping with the sheer aggression and experience of the four pros.
One pro who many expected to see under the lights was Erick Lindgren, but E-Dog fell from grace in spectacular fashion, heading to the E-Kennel in under an hour.
The main beneficiary of Lindgren’s fall was Men The Master. In one hand, Nguyen made an opening raise from late position with QQ, with. Dutch Boyd calling in the small blind, and Lindgren calling out of the big. The flop came queen-high with two hearts, and the money soon went in between Nguyen and his top set against Lindgren’s nut flush draw (Ah-Th). No heart came on the turn or river, and The Master left Lindgren with just 80,000. Nguyen finished off his work a couple of hands later, sending Lindgren to the rail.
Other who joined Lindgren over the course of the day were David Tran, John Phan, T.J. Cloutier, Barry Greenstein, Jimmy Tran, Jose Rosenkrantz and Dutch Boyd.
So we’re left with a final table with some big names dominating the line-up. Marvellous! Deeb goes in as the chip leader, but calling this one is going to be tough. Still, we like to stick our necks out on the line, so we reckon Corkins to play a corker.
