Final Table Set at WPT Borgata Poker Classic

Thursday, 31 January 2008

Getting your twenty-seven remaining players to whittle themselves down to a final table of six can be a turgid affair, but that wasn’t the case the Borgata yesterday as the six who have made the televised final table marched on in quick order.

Getting your twenty-seven remaining players to whittle themselves down to a final table of six can be a turgid affair, but that wasn’t the case the Borgata yesterday as the six who have made the televised final table marched on in quick order.
Overnight chip leader was David Tran, who begun the day with a smidgeon over $2 million. Tran kept up the pressure on his opponents, ending the day where he began – with the chip lead.
At the other end of the chip counts were a number of short stacks who came back in the hope of something magical happening early on. With only a minute of Level 21 remaining, players fell to the wayside throughout Level 22, a trend which continued all the way down to the last ten.
After the final ten had redrawn for seats, we were left with only David Tran, Men Nguyen, Justin Bonomo, Gavin Griffin, Lee Watkinson and Noah Schwartz as known players who had a shout at making the TV table.
Men Nguyen had just come off the back of a final table at the last WPT event in Tunica, but ‘The Master’s hope of back-to-back appearances were dashed after he went out in ninth. Another player who narrowly missed out on the televised spot was Justin Bonomo after his Ad-Kh lost in a race to Gavin Griffin’s pocket queens.
The final hand of the day meant that Shane LaBounty missed out on his time in front of the cameras after he was knocked out by Tran after his pocket tens ran into pocket queens. No miracle ten for LaBounty, and the final table is now set.
Tran holds a narrow chip lead over Gavin Griffin, with the two of them a long way in front of the remaining competitors:
Seat 1 Lee Watkinson $397,000
Seat 2 Noah Schwartz $1,320,000
Seat 3 Ervin Prifti $289,000
Seat 4 Gavin Griffin $5,105,000
Seat 5 Thomas Hare $2,851,000
Seat 6 David Tran $5,276,000
We’re notoriously good at picking the guy who comes second in these things, so we hereby give the resounding Bluff Europe endorsement to Gavin Griffin to take it down. Sorry Gavin!
