There’s been plenty of stink in recent weeks and months over attempts in Congress to bring an end to online gambling, with opponents pointing to the Wire Act of the 1920s, which prevents gambling over telephone wires, as a piece of legislation that needs updating.
Now, with politicians weighing in, it’s the turn of the public bodies, with the Family Research Council releasing an article that condemns playing online. Pointing out that internet crime fuels gambling addiction thanks to anonymity, the council also raises concerns about the effects the whole industry is having on young people – seeing as they have easy access to the internet.
Whether their arguments will carry any weight remains to be seen, but one they can certainly discount is the rise in crime over the web. Law enforcement continues to be built up to stop credit and debit card fraud in this area so those who want to play online can safely. Still, the influence the Family Research Council carry may mean this isn’t the last we’ve heard of the end of online gaming in the United States.
