Phil Hellmuth has staked his claim to the World Series of Poker
(WSOP) Europe, running from September 6th to 16th, stating that,
“I’m going to London to make history again by winning the first
WSOP bracelet ever awarded outside of Las Vegas.”
Registration for the event, which will be held at three London
casinos, Fifty, in St James; The Casino at the Empire in Leicester
Square, and The Sportsman, in Marble Arch, has only been open for
two weeks, but WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack has announced
that, there are already “Over 60 WSOP bracelets between the
pre-registrants so far. The inaugural World Series Europe will have
a world-class field.”
Big names include: Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey,
Allen Cunningham, Erik Seidel, Roland de Wolfe, Jennifer Harman,
John Juanda, Todd Brunson, Eli Elezra, and Humberto Brenes.
For less stellar players there are still a number of options
outside the £10,000 direct buy-in. A number of satellites are
operating at online poker rooms, including Titan and Full Tilt
Poker, which has a number of European Series packages hilariously
titled ‘plan B’.
Betfair, the event’s main sponsor is pushing hard, and has
committed to sending 125 players, with their Head of Poker, Ben
Fried explaining that, “We want to have a strong presence on the
ground at this event. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our players
to compete against some of the greatest in the world.”
