In what is sure to be a popular win amongst the online poker community, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier won the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in impressive fashion last night. As we predicted here yesterday, Grospellier was the biggest threat to David Pham and his commanding chip lead and ultimately the Frenchman rose to claim the title and $2,000,000.
Although he started second, the final table was all about the online pro. Quick out of the blocks, he eliminated Richard Fohrenbach and Christian Harder in the early stages. The table then slowed a little before he knocked out Joe ‘BigEgypt’ Elpayaa with AQ against Elpayaa’s KJs.
In the meantime the final table had not been such a pleasant ride for David Pham, but he soon found himself in the mix by knocking out Englishman Craig Hopkinds in fifth place after Hopkins moved all in with Kd-8d and was called by The Dragons pocket tens.
Four handed, and the table was dominated by Grospellier, who used his new-found chip lead to keep his opponents on a tight leash. The key hand to the whole tournament soon came, and it was Grospellier acting as the dragon slayer.
Grospellier raised to 400,000 from under the gun, with Pham calling out of the big blind. The flop came Kh-Qh-5d, which was checked by both players. The turn came Jd, which saw Pham check raise Grospellier’s 700,000 bet all in for an additional 2.5 million. With a pot now standing at around 4.2 million, Grospellier called with the nut flush draw (Ad-2d), figuring he had at least nine diamonds to draw to, and perhaps the Ace for an additional three outs. Pham tabled Qc-5c, and Grospellier was 18% to hit the river.
Hit it he did, the 7d peeling off on the river and sending David Pham to the rail. From here the tournament was for Grospellier to lose, and the Frenchman kept his cool to close the deal. A huge all in bluff during the heads up battle between Grospellier and Khan went all wrong as Grospellier’s pocket eights were ahead of the 93o. The board didn’t help, and Grospellier was left standing as the EPT PCA Champion.
