ElkY on the march at EPT San Remo

ElkY on the march at EPT San Remo

Saturday, 17 April 2010

The disruption caused by the volcanic ash couldn't prevent another bumper field in the Italian Riviera yesterday for the second opening flight of EPT San Remo. A record-breaking 1,240 players have bought in with just 619 remaining as we go into Day 2.

Leading the way is qualifier Michael Eerhart who broke away from the pack in the latter stages of the day after winning a monstrous pot with pocket aces over Sebastian Bauer's pocket kings. The Dutchman finished with 247,800 chips.

Looming large is the dominating presence of Bertrand Grospellier though.
ElkY had a great day, flopping quads and eliminating a couple of opponents on back to back hands holding Ace King each time. The French phenomenon currently sits in second place overall, just 15,000 chips behind the leader. Other big names still in the hunt include last year's APPT Macau winner Dermot Blain, Jason Mercier (who managed to get to San Remo from London by bus after the flight chaos), Lex Veldhuis and 2009 EPT Dortmund winner Sandra Naujoks.

James Dempsey leads the British contingent with JP Kelly, Marc Goodwin, Tony Cascarino and newly crowned Irish Open champion James Mitchell all still in the hunt.

The action resumes at lunchtime today.

The leading chip counts are as follows:

Michael Eerhart 247800
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier 232500
Dermot Blain 211800
Craig McCorkell 170000
Bernard Boutboul 130000
Rasmus Nielsen 120000
Kevin MacPhee 114000
James "Flushy" Dempsey 100000
Paul Berende 100000
Sami Kelopuro 95000
