ElkY, David Williams and Terrence Chan take WCoOP Titles.
Monday, 21 September 2009
The PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker tournament series has been a good one for the pros recently – not only did Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and David “Lost to Raymer at the 2004 WSOP” Williams take down separate events over the weekend, but so did Terrence “Unassigned” Chan.
ElkY managed to best a field of 1,169 in the $530 NL event with one rebuy and one add-on. Over 1,500 re-buys and add-ons sent the prize pool to over $1.3m with a 171-strong cashing field.
Humberto Brenes and Grant Levy both made the money, but fellow PokerStars pro Bertrand stole the show by storming into the last 18, taking the chip lead with JJ over AQ and reaching the final table in 5th place.
Eventually he made it to heads-up with Ginsash, who clawed back at the Frenchman’s slight chip advantage to fight bravely over the next hour. Eventually ElkY gained a 2-1 chip lead and induced a bluff with bottom pair from his opponent, which he quickly snapped off with K9o for top two pair on a 924KJ board to take $232,730.
Meanwhile, David Williams was racing to the top in the massive $2,100 8-Game event (Limit 2-7, Limit Hold ‘em, Limit Omaha 8, Razz, Limit 7-Card Stud, Limit Stud 8, NLHE, PLO) that featured practically every PokerStars pro, besting 245 players to win $107,800 after making a flush in Stud to eliminate his heads-up opponent.
Terrence “Unassigned” Chan followed up his bracelet win in the Spring Championship Of Online Poker short handed limit event with a repeat performance in the WCOOP short-handed limit hold'em event. The Canadian beat Cesar Fuentes heads up for a cash of $83,030.
