Eastgate puts World Cup before World Series

Eastgate puts World Cup before World Series

Wednesday, 16 June 2010

As you'd expect there are a host of former World Champions making their presence felt at this year's WSOP. Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson, Craig Raymer, Joe Cada have all been busy at the Rio and even Jerry Yang has gone deep in a couple of events.

One former World Champ notable for his absence though is Team PokerStars pro Peter Eastgate. The sporting calendar hasn't been kind to the 2008 champ who is a massive football fan as well as a top poker pro. Something had to give and the Dane has chosen the World Cup over the start of the World Series.

The 24-year-old will be focussing on Denmark's progress in the group stages before concentrating on poker. Writing on the PokerStars blog Eastgate said, “I don't have the motivation to play all the small events at the WSOP. That would be a waste of money. To me it's not that important to win bracelet number two.”

Eastgate has confirmed that he'll be in South Africa before making his way to Vegas in time for the Main Event.

After Denmark's anaemic start to the tournament against Holland and a host of disappointing group games the prospect of a $1k WSOP donkament may seem more appealing.
