EPT London High Rollers, Day 1: Benyamine Tops Opening Session

EPT London High Rollers, Day 1: Benyamine Tops Opening Session

Monday, 6 October 2008

If you thought the action in London had finally come to a close, you are sadly mistaken. Yes, four WSOPE bracelets have been handed out, as well as an EPT title, but there is still the small issue of who will win the EPT London High Rollers Event, a £20,000 buy-in tournament which has attracted all the big dogs from the poker world.

The field was a star-studded affair, with former WSOP Main Event champions Chris Ferguson, Scotty Nguyen, Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem and Chris Moneymaker joined by the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, Barry Greenstein and Tom Dwan. The WSOPE Main Event Champion John Juanda was also in town, fresh off the back of his marathon victory on Friday morning.

With so many strong players in the field, it was obvious there would be some high profile casulties, and so it proved. Ivey, Hansen, Antonius and Hachem were all out by the close of play.

At the other end of the leaderboard, David Benyamine heads the remaining fourteen players coming into the concluding day today. Juanda also navigated his way to a second day, along with Scotty Nguyen and Jason Mercier. November Nine chip leader Dennis Phillips has also made it to Day 2, but only just, bringing one of the shortest stacks back to London on Monday.

The chip counts at the end of Day 1 look like this:

David Benyamine - 295,900
Alexander Roumeliotis - 229,400
Jason Mercier - 161,200
Scotty Nguyen - 159,100
Masaaki Kagawa - 159,000
John Juanda - 138,900
Michael Watson - 118,000
Peter Jetten - 105,100
Isabelle Mercier - 99,200
Isaac Haxton - 83,200
Dennis Phillips - 73,200
Ghassan Bitar - 58,700
Andrew Feldman - 33,000
Jani Sointula - 6,500
