The Day Ones have been completed. This year’s EPT Scandinavian Open has a total of 460 entrants, generating a prize pool of $4,156,270. Amongst the well-known players in the field on Day 1b were Andy Black, Tony G, Katja Thater, Luca Pagano, and Michael ‘Timex’ McDonald.
In what, on paper, seemed to be a slightly easier day than it’s predecessor, Tony G was a little unlucky to get a tough table draw, with William Thorson, Nicolas Levi and Paul Testud all sat on his starting table. Eventually Tony had to pedal off into the distance after Micke Norinder claimed his scalp, G’s flopped flush being beaten by a full house. Also out early in the tournament were Thatjer and Black, as well as Roy ‘The Boy’ Brindley.
Michael ‘Timex’ McDonald had a stroke of luck late in the day when his pocket queens decided to dance with the pocket kings of Russell Carson. A fortuitous Qc on the river meant Timex hit his two outer, sending Carson to the rail in the process.
The one thing we do like are action hands, although this one won’t have gone down too well with William Thorson. Four players limped to see a flop of Ks-Th-9s, and the big blind let out. Thorson smooth-called with his pocket nines, only to see a raise and an all-in from the remaining two players behind him! The big blind folded, and Thorson called with his set. The player in the small blind tabled K-T for the top two pair, whilst the other player showed Qs-Js, for the flopped straight and monster redraw to the straight flush. Internet-style action indeed! The turn came the Ts, giving Thorson TT999, the small blind KKTTT and the player on the button hitting the gutshot straight flush! Thorson was the shortest of the three stacks and was therefore out.
Theo Jorgensen made a late run at the chip lead, taking over the top spot in the last few hands of the day. The top ten stacks from the days play read like this:
Peter Eastgate 79,700
Ola Brandborn 79,300
Theo Jørgensen 75,900
Mathias Andersen 71,600
Stig Farholt 70,600
Andreas Glannbro 69,700
Nedin Musa 67,300
Tommy Pavlicek 67,000
Dennis Naci Hansen 63,300
Simon Dørslund 59,500
