Dzmitry Urbanovich Dazzles In Dublin

Monday, 22 February 2016

The Dublin stop of the European Poker Tour (EPT) finished over the weekend with Polish phenom Dzmitry Urbanovich winning its €5,300 ($5,926) buy-in main event to pocket €561,900 ($619,798).

The PokerStars-owned tournament series opened from the Royal Dublin Society on February 9 while its concluding main event boasted a field of 605 competitors.

Urbanovich was crowned EPT Player Of The Year in 2015 after making his name in numerous high-roller events, most notably finishing as runner-up in the €100,000 ($110,315) buy-in affair at last year’s EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo to bank €1.595 million ($1.759 million).

The Pole fought a back-and-forth heads-up battle against part-time poker player, student and deejay Gilles Bernies after going into one-on-one play holding a four-to-one chip deficit.

Fortunately for Urbanovich, he was able to quickly double up in the match after flopping a straight and getting paid off. He then took the chip lead after catching his German opponent making a move with just a four-high while he held a pair and a flush draw.

Unflustered, Bernies grinded back to evens before a huge hand gave Urbanovich the lead for the final time.

With the pair getting it in on the flop, Urbanovich showed triple aces versus a flush draw from Bernies. Although the German hit his flush on the river, the card also paired the board to give Urbanovich a full-house. With few chips left, Bernies was then forced to shove with queen-high and ran into the 20-year-old’s kings with the cowboys holding up to hand the latter his maiden EPT title.
