Duhamel riding high at WPT Marrakech

Friday, 25 November 2011

Jonathan Duhamel was the big story at the opening day of the €2,700+€300 World Poker Tour event in Marrakech that got under way yesterday. Last year's WSOP Main Event winner closed the day with a stack of 113,600, good enough for eighth place on the leader board.

Of the 274 starters, 148 will be joining Duhamel for day 2 including 2010 WPT Amneville winner Sam El Sayed, Eugene Katchalov, Surinder Sunar, Brandon Cantu and Barny Boatman. ElkY put his whoopinh at the hands of Lex Veldhuis in the kickboxing ring behind him and closed the day nestled in the middle of the pack with a just above average stack.

James Akenhead topped the list of notables to bust out on the opening day. Joining the two-time WSOP finalist on the rail were the likes of John Eames and French pro Guillaume Darcourt.

The 149 survivors will be competing for a share of a prize pool that stands just short of €1.1m when the action resumes this afternoon. Mohamed Ali Houssam is the chip leader on 186,700 followed by Ian Marmion on 158,500.
