Doyle’s Heads-Up Battle with Cancer

Doyle’s Heads-Up Battle with Cancer

Wednesday, 7 November 2012

Doyle Brunson is used to handing out bad beats at the table but in the last 24 hours it seems he was handed his own, not by a player, but by a doctor. According to a recent tweet the poker legend is battling a slow growth cancer called squamas cell cancer.

“It was malignant. 4 times I have heard that in my life. Chilling way to start the day. Squamas cell cancer, nothing to worry about. #yeahright.”
The disturbing news shocked many in the poker community when they read it but for Doyle it was just another of life’s punches he had to roll with.

Indeed, for a man that’s already beat cancer three times, not to mention stared down armed robbers back in his Texas road game days, Doyle is looking on the bright side.

“Tx 4 the support about the cancer. It's a slow growth type that is usually ok but it's something you had rather not hear. #beentheredonethat.”

The poker community will certainly be wishing Doyle a speedy recovery but one also suspects that it will take a lot more than squamas cell cancer to keep him away from the felt. Indeed, having seen off what the doctors described as “incurable” cancer in 1962, we think it won’t be long before Doyle is on the road to recovery and stacking chips again.
