Doyle Brunson Pays Homage to Chip Reese

Whilst the poker world was stunned by the death of Chip Reese, none were hit in the same way as his close friend Doyle Brunson. He and Reese spent many years on the road seeking out games, and over the years they became best friends.

Whilst the poker world was stunned by the death of Chip Reese, none were hit in the same way as his close friend Doyle Brunson. He and Reese spent many years on the road seeking out games, and over the years they became best friends. On Monday, Brunson took time to write in his personal blog about how he had been affected by the untimely death of Chip, and how the poker world will find it impossible to replace him.
Even now it is clear that the sudden death of Reese has shocked Doyle. 'How could my best friend, who was 56 years old and apparently in good health, be gone? It felt like a big hole in my body that could never be filled,' Brunson wrote.
While they were best friends, they were enemies on the poker table, with a fierce rivalry underlined by a mutual respect for each other’s game. Brunson commented that Reese was the best all round player he has come across, and his tenacity when others might have literally collapsed was unrivalled.
What sets Reese apart from many, according to Brunson, is the class Chip exuded away from the tables.
'He was a class act outside of gambling. He was a devoted family man and loved watching his son play baseball... If Chip had an enemy in the world I don't know who it was.'
Brunson ends his entry by sharing a quote from Reese himself.
'Chip said, 'I will stop playing when you have my funeral. Then only God will know what I'll be doing.' I'm sure God has a very special place for a special guy like Chip.'
Life won’t be the same for any of us, least of all Doyle.
