Dena Leath was understandably “thrilled” by her victory at the Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge $1000 no-limit Hold‘em tournament, and described it as “a real confidence builder”. Little wonder; having only just turned pro, Leath cannot have expected a monster win so soon.
For her victory over the 185 person field, Leath will take home $58,918. This win marks her third final table in the nine tournaments she has played since turning pro. While the field was not huge by online tournament standards, the quality of the other players was very high, and included Scotty Nguyen, Todd Brunson, Mike Matusow, Clonie Gowen, Linda Johnson and Men “The Master” Nguyen.
The 185 participants and sizeable prizes were new ground for the Cherokee Casino in Oklahoma, to the delight of senior manager of poker Tony Armstrong, who called the tournament “an unequivocal success.”
Leath’s win must have pleased Scotty Nguyen, who is working hard to establish his own ‘brand’ of poker tournaments. He himself has won over $6,900,000 in live tournaments and is known for his philosophical approach to bad beats, summed up by the phrase, “That’s poker baby.”
