Demo Kirlopoulos wins Punta Cana Poker Classic

Tuesday, 15 November 2011

Demo Kirlopoulos is the Caribbean king after winning the second annual Punta Cana Poker Classic in the Dominican Republic. The Canadian outlasted a field of 415 runners that included the likes of Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott, Humberto Brenes, Amanda Leatherman, Evelyn Ng, Tatjana Pasalic and fresh from his recent stint on Sky Poker and sporting a rather wonderful Movember tache, McLean Karr.

Kirlopoulos went into heads up play against Evan Mauer with a 5.1m to 3.3m chip lead and looked to have sealed the win holding K5 on a K52 flop. Mauer, who was holding AK, spiked an ace on the river to put him firmly back in contention. The Canadian's persistence paid off though, eventually sealing the win after five and a half hours of heads up play. The chips hit the middle on a 10-K-10 board with Kilopoulos holding A-10 and Mauer KQ. The turn and river were blanks giving Canada its second Punta Cana winner.

Runner up Mauer was gracious in defeat saying, “It was a great ride and having all the Bodog players behind me at the end gave me a huge amount of confidence – I just wish I could have gone all the way but hat’s off to Demo Kirlopoulos, he played a fantastic game all week.”

The top five positions and payouts were as follows:

1st. Demo Kirlopoulos $136.950
2nd. Evan Mauer $82,792
3rd. Greg Bastin $54,780
4th. Engleberth Varela $33,615
5th. Jose Baria $26,767
