The inaugural PokerNews Cup got underway at the Crown Casino in Melbourne this weekend, with 428 players taking to the tables. Top players amongst the field included Lee Nelson, Tony G, Jeff Lisandro and Joe Hachem.
The action got off to a frantic start, with Jozef Berec busting in the first orbit when he flopped top two on a KQ7 board to find Karsten Cobbing with 77. Berec had outs for the full house, but the river seven made quads for Cobbing, and left Berec crippled. He put the remaining chips in with Jd 8d, only to run into pocket Jacks. Ouch.
WSOP 2005 Main Event winner and Australian poker icon Joe Hachem was out by the close of the day after his re-raise with AK met an untimely pair of Kings, and when the board bricked out, Hachem was sent home. Not that he had far to go, mind.
Another famous Australian export in the form of Tony G was also a victim with AK, raising pre-flop and getting one caller. A rag flop looked good to Tony G who raised all-in over the initial flop bet, but his opponent’s flopped pair and flush draw held up and Tony was singing no more. Other notable eliminations included Jeffrey Lissandro and Mel Judah.
