David Vamplew defeats John Juanda for EPT London title

Tuesday, 5 October 2010

John Juanda narrowly missed out on adding the EPT London Main Event title to his 25 WSOP final tables; four bracelets and six WPT final tables last night after a long heads-up match with Scottish maths graduate David Vamplew.

Juanda came to the final table second in chips; he was in the advantageous position of sitting to big stack Kyle Bowker’s left and exploited it mercilessly. For nine of the ten hours that the final table played out, it was the John Juanda show as he stole every pot from the shorter stacks – Vamplew flew under the radar and built up a healthy stack as Juanda brazenly chipped up.

When the Team Full Tilt pro eliminated Bowker in third place, it was all over bar the shouting as he held a near 4-1 chip lead over his opponent. Well... there was a lot of shouting. The lead swung back and forth as Vamplew held his ground against Juanda’s aggression before doubling up on a J-J-7 board with J-T to J-2.

Juanda ground him down again before he got the money in with Tc-9c against Juanda’s A-5, dutifully hitting a ten on the turn and a third club on the river to even up the stacks again. Once again, Juanda ground him down before calling his shove with the nut straight and losing out to a rivered flush.

Then, in the last break, it seemed that Vamplew had had his Weetabix. He came back and totally reversed proceedings by grinding down Juanda’s stack until eventually he was forced to move in with K-2. A call by Vamplew with A-3; ace on the flop; that’s all she wrote.

Juanda continues his London luck with a £545,000 win but he was really after the title and the £900,000 first prize. And look, we didn’t make the obvious “Great Scot!" pun. The final table payouts were as follows:

1. David Vamplew - £900,000
2. John Juanda - £545,000
3. Kyle Bowker - £300,000
4. Artur Wasek - £240,000
5. Kayvan Payman - £190,000
6. Fernando Brito - £145,000
7. Tom Marchese - £100,000
8. Per Ummer - £66,800
