The World Poker Tour made its first visit to the North East over the Bank Holiday weekend with 411 players taking to the tables for the WPT National Newcastle.

Amongst the hopefuls at Aspers were some top pros including Surinder Sunar, Jack Elwood and Irish Open winner Ian Simpson, not to mention a sprinkling of local celebrity in the form of boxing champ Stu Hall and Geordie Shore star Jay Gardner.

After a busy few days of action it was midlander Darren Mapley who was the big winner though. The man from Wolverhampton claimed the leg four title and with it a first prize of £17,500 after beating Mark Gray heads up.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 Darren Mapley £17,500.00
2 Mark Gray £12,245.00
3 Hazel Birchnall £7,875.00
4 Gary Copeland £5,825.00
5 Andrew Hetherington £4,375.00
6 Alexander Walton £3,500.00
7 Mark Harding £2,905.00
8 James Arthur Brady £2,325.00
