Darren Annis Wins GUKPT Thanet Main Event

Darren Annis Wins GUKPT Thanet Main Event

Monday, 19 October 2009

There was a local winner at the latest stop of the GUKPT in Thanet yesterday with Welling’s Darren Annis emerging victorious. The Kent man outlasted a field of 132 runners including double WSOP bracelet winner JP Kelly and November Nine finalist James Akenhead.

Annis went into the final table with a handy chip lead and extended it almost immediately after eliminating Nigel Berg and Adam Vinson. He steadily accumulated chips throughout what proved to be a very quick final day, to set up a heads up encounter with WSOP PLO runner up Jeff Kimber.

With the tournament seemingly slipping through his grasp, Annis got a vital stroke of luck when he outdrew Kimber’s dominating AJ with A4. AJ proved to be a lucky charm for Annis as he sealed the win holding that hand shortly afterwards. The Kent man collected a first prize of £41,910 and a place in the Champion of Champions event. Kimber had to settle for £27,060 for his runner up finish.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1st Darren Annis £41,910
2nd Jeff Kimber £27,060
3rd Lawrie Inman £18,480
4th Peter Charalambous £11,550
5th Andreas £8,250
6th James £6,600
7th Robert Topp £5,280
8th Adam Vinson £3,960
9th Nigel Berg £2,640
