Dario Minieri leads PCA High Roller event

Tuesday, 12 January 2010

Now that the $10,300 Main Event is done and dusted, those with wads of cash big enough head over to the $25,000 High Roller event. Attendance nearly doubled on last year as 84 players sat down.

Dario Minieri leads the field of just over 50 at the end of Day 1, holding an impressive 218,600. Lex Veldhuis is right behind him with only a couple of thousand between them.

It was also a good day for World Champion Joe Cada who sits in 4th place with a stack of 164,000. Other big names remaining include former World Champions Greg Raymer and Peter Eastgate, WSOPE runner up Daniel Negreanu, Justin Smith, Sandra Naujoks and Chad Brown.

Mike Matusow has been known to gripe about how badly he runs at the table but the new, positive thinking Matusow had cause to celebrate after a king on the river saw his pocket cowboys overturn Lee Markholt’s Aces. The Mouth was nestled safely in the middle of the bunch at the close of play.

Last year’s champion, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier is still alive but only just – he has just over seven times the big blind when play resumes tomorrow, nursing a stack of 7,200. Can he make it three PCA titles in a row? Last year he took down the $25,000 event for $433k and in 2008 won the whole shebang.

Join us tomorrow for more updates on this high-flying tournament.
