Dan Murariu wins Unibet Open Golden Sands

Wednesday, 9 June 2010

The luxurious resort of Golden Sands in Bulgaria was the venue for the latest leg of the Unibet Open. 394 players from 27 countries competed for a prize pool of €591,000 with Romanian Dan Murariu eventually taking the honours.

It was a case of third time lucky for Murariu who, after a pair of Unibet Open final table appearances, finally sealed a maiden victory. The Romanian started the final day holding twice the amount of chips of his nearest rival and played a tight, conservative game while the shorter stacks knocked themselves out. Murariu picked up the pace as the field thinned, winning a massive coin flip against Lasse Nielsen to set up a heads up clash with Bjaerke Hansen.

The chip lead changed hands a few times during heads up play but Murariu surged ahead after his pocket sevens held up against the Dane's A6. The end came soon after with Hansen's Q8 unable to overturn Murariu's pocket queens.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1st – €150,705 – Dan Murariu
2nd – €97,515 – Bjaerke Hansen
3rd – €65,010 – Lasse Nielsen
4th – €47,280 – Simeon Naydenov
5th – €36,938 – Twan Bakens
6th – €25,118 – Alexandr Sharov
7th – €18,617 – Nicolas Dervaux
8th – €13,298 – Mosjin el Yakoubi
9th – €10,638 – Pedro Fanzeres
