Cypriot granny poker case dropped

Monday, 5 March 2012

The case against 40 elderly Cypriot women accused of taking part in an illegal poker game has been dropped. The women, including a 98-year-old, received a summons last week in relation to a police raid in Limassol in 2009.

Authorities on the Mediterranean island have said that there is now no case to answer. An assistant to the Attorney General said that Petros Clerides had been unaware of the case and only found out out about it in the media.

Fines of up to €750 or even a six month jail term can be given for gambling offences in Cyprus.
