Cuong Tran beats Neil Channing to GUKPT London title

Monday, 29 March 2010

The GUKPT London event saw 318 players take to the felt in the hopes of grabbing the six-figure first prize. When it came down to the final ten, it could have been anyone’s game as online pro Laurance Houghton; EPT winner Vicky Coren; GUKPT winner Darren Annis and the man himself, Neil Channing, were all vying for the top spot.

Neil Channing looked like he would be taking the event down with no questions asked as he moved into a 2-1 heads-up chip lead after eliminating Leon Bui. However, his opponent rivered a straight against Channing’s set to turn the tide of the game before hitting a T when his T-7 was drawing against Channing’s 99.

Channing adds an £84,700 score to his $2.2m in tournament earnings. The full list of placings and payouts is as follows:

1st Cuong Tran £127,800
2nd Neil Channing £84,700
3rd Leon Bui £56,000
4th Rumit Somaiya £33,400
5th Steven Ducharme £25,300
6th Salman Behbhani £20,500
7th Michael McCool £15,700
8th Darren Annis £11,900
9th Victoria Coren £9,100
10th Laurence Houghton £6,700
