News of the tragic plane crash involving Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle has affected poker players as well as baseball enthusiasts. Lidle was a poker fanatic and a regular in poker tournament circuits.
Lidle used his celebrity status and passion for poker to the advantage of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, who benefited from The Cory Lidle Celebrity Poker Tournament. The last such event featured a $1,200 buy-in and players took to the felt alongside Lidle and fellow baseball players like Mike Lieberthal, and Jeremy Giambi as well as celebrities like Thunder Keller and Lisa Guerrero. After breaking even in 2005, this year’s event raised $15,000 for the charity.
Lidle had spoken out about surviving a plane crash, just days before his private aircraft smashed into the side of a Manhattan apartment block. Onlookers watched in horror as the small plane ploughed into the 30th floor of the building, sparking fears of a 9/11 style attack.
Lidle, who was 34, died instantly in the crash and his death comes as almost as much of a loss to poker as it is to the baseball community.
