While most people had their eyes on The Rio for the WSOP Main Event there was the small matter of $2m to be played for at the final table of the latest WPT event. In the end it was Cornel Cimpan who outran the 352-runner field at Foxwoods to claim the first prize of $910,058.

The American outlasted a final table that included Lee Markholt, Curt Kohlberg, Eric Froelich and Matt Stout to set up a heads up encounter with Soheil Shamseddin. Cimpan overturned a four to one chip deficit and finally sealed the win holding AJ to Shamseddin’s KJ. The board brought no help to either player leaving Shamseddin to settle for $463,332 for his runner up finish. The win was Cimpan’s second on the WPT this year. He won the LA Poker Classic in February for a score of $1.68m.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Cornel Andrew Cimpan - $910,058

2. Soheil Shamseddin - $463,332

3. Matt Stout - $265,710

4. Eric Froehlich - $232,496

5. Curt Kohlberg - $199,283

6. Lee Markholt - $166,069

The next event on the WPT is the prestigious Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic from 14th to 19th December. Eugene Katchalov won the title last year, picking up a first prize of $2.4m.
