In America, the largest tournament ever to be held in the western state of Colorado finished on Sunday with Michael Haggard winning the Heartland Poker Tour event at Blackhawk’s Golden Gates Casino.
The series started October 1 with qualifying events, all of which sold out and attracted a total of 1,545 players. State law prohibits a direct buy-in option so players had to qualify with the final tournament seeing 309 players vying for the top spot at the $1,500 tournament, which had a prize pool of $463,000.
Haggard walked away with $129,780 while runner-up Steven Klaus won $64,890 for his troubles. Third placed finisher Michael Banducci won $41,715 in front of Jonathan Lima who went home with $32,445. The final six players to finish in the money included Oliver Schlemko, who won $27,810, and Vernon Waite, awarded $23,175.
“Wow, what can I say,” said Haggard. “It was pretty amazing. I guess you could say I got pretty lucky.”
Satellites are now running for the next Heartland Poker Tour event at the Lucky Nugget Card Club in Deadwood, South Dakota. The $1,650 main event, which sold out last year, will have two starting flights on October 20 with the final table is scheduled to take place the next day.
